Greening of deserts.

For millions of people on our planet, "desert" is a terrible word, synonymous with hunger, thirst and death. Vast territories devoid of water, and therefore of life, are only growing, and until recently nothing could be done about it.

The greening of the desert is becoming an important part of the activities of progressive people. The project of ecological afforestation is the greening of deserts and afforestation of degraded landscapes.

Planting new trees

The semi-desert and desert zone is home to 2 billion people; 90% of them are residents of developing countries. Many of them are small-scale farmers and shepherds, the world's poorest inhabitants, whose survival and well-being are completely dependent on the natural environment. For these people, trees in the desert are a refuge from the scorching sun, and often a source of food.

Solving the problem of improvement of deserts is very important in connection with the increase in their territory. This is a serious problem in the lives of people caught in the path of the expanding desert. In the case of the Sahara, it is the threat of a broad swath to the south called the Sahel. Hundreds of thousands of people live there, who suffer greatly from the lack of water and its poor quality.

Afforestation, planting trees and protecting existing ones are producing positive results. In Niger, efforts by local farmers to conserve trees and shrubs close to farmland have helped to increase yields, incomes and household energy. Back in the mid-1980s, they restored 5 million hectares of land, planting 200 million new trees.

Following the vegetation in the desert, agriculture may appear, as well as livestock breeding, the researchers suggest. They are confident that such changes will help solve food problems in many third world countries.
